You don't have to brush your teeth...Only the ones you want to keep!

Brushing our teeth is a lot like washing our face. We don’t scrub our face as hard as we can to get the dirt off, so similarly, we also do not need to be rough when it comes to brushing our teeth. When choosing a toothbrush we need to remember that the size and shape should fit according to what is comfortable for you. The bristles should be soft or extra soft so it is not harsh on your gums. It is important to replace our toothbrush every 3 to 4 months, or even sooner if the bristles become frayed or look worn.

Remember, it is important to do your time by brushing two minutes twice a day!

Did you know that if plaque is left on our gums for more than 24 hours the plaque hardens?

Once the plaque has hardened it becomes calculus. After calculus is formed, we can no longer remove it from our teeth by simply just brushing! At Avant Dentistry, Dr. Liang uses special hygiene instruments to remove the calculus and polishes your teeth to give you a "reset" button!

Tip: Our tongue is a very strong muscle and can move the toothbrush away, making some areas harder to reach. It is important to look in the mirror, lift your tongue and make sure you are reaching every surface!


  • Create a routine that is comfortable for you. Pick a starting point and work your way around to all the teeth
  • Tilt the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle at the gum line
  • Draw small circles along each tooth until reaching the opposite side of the mouth.
  • Brush along the side of the tooth that touches the cheek, the tongue side, and the part we use to chew.
